Everyone claiming to be a follower of Christ should be devoted to prayer, but we're not. There are dozens of reasons why, but the main reasons I've struggled is distractions and procrastination. Can you identify? I often get frustrated with myself and ask God to help me do better. Or I will get into a prayer time and it seems that all kinds of thoughts run through my mind and those thoughts distract me and prayer just isn't possible. Again, I get frustrated and ask God for help. God heard me, and he answered me by giving me ideas to make prayer less of a struggle. First, when I go to prayer, I take a pen and paper. When those thoughts distract me, I write them down until they cease. Many of those thoughts are important tasks that I may have forgotten about, people I need to call, or even bills that are due. I'm then free to pray without distractions. So why does God allow the devil to distract me when I pray? Who said it was the devil? The moment we go to God in prayer, He moves toward us. Prayer is a dialog, listen when you pray, pause and be quiet throughout your praying. Those distractions were His pointing out things I need to take care of.
Second, pray about everything. When getting up, getting dressed, bathing, leaving or arriving home, at work, for fellow employees, at the grocery, and on and on. It's so easy to forget...again distractions. Write them out, little two line prayers, and as I stated yesterday, like you speak to a buddy. I have a prayer for rising, " Hey God, help me stay sober today, I turn my will and life over to you...or when I shower, God, I'm cleaning my body You blessed me with, clean my thoughts to not think bad thoughts...or as I eat, God, I'm feeding myself to sustain my life, sustain my spirit and nourish me with Your Word." I know that as I use these small prayers for everything, my prayer life becomes my life. I don't forget the freedom I have been given through Christ to approach the One who named every star and by a word established the universe.., it's a privilege.(read Hebrews 4:16) We all must pray. Our prayers will be answered if we ask in faith. Prayer without faith is a wish. We also need help only He can give to free us from our addictions, (we all have them..yes that means you), to cover our families with prayer, and to know real life. Don't allow anything to stop you. Pray, ask, and tell Him of your gratitude. Thanks, Be well, be blessed. Keith
