Everyone feared those wandering Hebrews as they arrived in Canaan. They had heard of the 10 plagues that God visited on Egypt to deliver His people from Egypt's slavery. And how God divided the Red Sea when Pharoah changed his mind and pursued after Israel to return them into bondage. They feared the children of Israel and their God, knowing Israel was finally returning to the land God promised Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, theirs forever. Then they went to the small place called Ai with a company of 3000. Ai routed Israel. Joshua, Israel's leader was stunned. He went prostrate before God, questioning why they lost the battle. God told Joshua to get off of his face. There was sin in the camp, fix it!
"Israel has sinned, and they have transgressed My covenant which I
commanded them. For they have taken some of the accursed things
and have both stolen and deceived, and they have also put it among
their own stuff.....Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy
the accursed thing from among you." Josh.7:11-12b (NKJV)
Some people think that this is showing God is an angry God, not a God of love. Read all of the passage, in fact, read the whole Bible, especially the books of history. God gave Israel commandments for their protection. A people without law are not a people long. That's a whole different topic and for another time. God also required that His people, obey Him, and strive to please Him. If he overlooked this sin, the people would be overran with evil in no time. In other words, let a little evil in, and there is much evil to follow.
We know, at least most of us do, that allowing the smallest crime to go unpunished, is a green light. A little dope leads to a full blown addiction. A little bit of anything, overlooked, can destroy a family, cost us a job. A little anger leads to rage leads to death often. And we allow this in our lives. We allow the sin in our camp. The way out of addiction and alcoholism is quitting entirely, and by any means. In our homes, we must be determined to get rid of evil in all of it's various forms, if you want God's blessings to rest on our home. A witch hunt..no, not at all. Puritanism, nope. Pleasing God in all we do, you betcha. A question for you and I is, do we know what pleases or displeases Him?
What's in your house? Do you allow pornography? teenage parties with dope, booze, and sexually promiscuous behavior? arguments between spouses fighting for controll? There are many things that we know are sin, that we ignore in the camp. We allow a little, here and there, we will be swallowed and eventually broken by it. No one wants to see their kids on drugs and alcohol. No one wants to see their homes in ruins. Our society is one of moral decay, listen to the lyrics to the songs, the TV show themes, the books produced. Pick out what you wouldn't watch or listen to if God were present, and get it out of your home so blessings can shower down.
Thanks for reading, God bless and keep you all, Keith.
